Digging In

thurSungravelride

The week so far had been pretty lackluster in the bike ridin’ department: one hour on the trainer and a 15+ mile lap of singletrack at MMCC was all I had under my ever-expanding belt. Thankfully that changed today and I got out on the Boone for 47.5 miles of dirt roads, pavement and gravel. Huzzah!

After several days of cold, wet weather, Ma Nature got her shit together and threw we Michiganderburgherites a second consecutive day of sunshine and sixty degree temps. While I was keen to get back on singletrack, I was keener to roll more calorie burning base junk miles.

These trees smell pine-tastic!!

Since that’s what I wanted to do, that’s what I did. I just felt more like rolling out my back door for nearly fifty miles of multi-surfacial* roads instead of driving somewhere to ride sixteen. Something that I am lucky to be able to do.

Help me, I’m sinking!

There’s not too much to say about the ride other than it was swell and that there was some DEEP dirt out there today [seen in the photo above]. I was rolling along South Brinton Road on a slight uphill section, trying to stay in the packed down center of the road. When a car approached I moved over to the right and before I even had a chance to put some power down and dig in, I came to a complete stop in the silty dirt. Thankfully the car was out of sight quickly, which saved me the embarrassment of being seen coming to said dead stop like a fat lycra wearing buffoon. If that road is bad after a couple days of rain, God knows what it will be like in the ballsy part of the summer.

More mistakes.

Thankfully that was the only on the bike mishap today, the only other issue was at some point accidentally knocking my s95 into HDR mode; where in the camera snaps several photos in a row and then stacks them on top of each other for some crap, super high contrast effect. Well that’s what it does in theory when you use a tripod. When you’re rolling along a dirt road and accidentally take a pic in HDR you get something that looks like you did a double exposure with a Holga but in reality you just took a crap photo while fumbling with your camera.

That’s it, the weather is turning back to shit overnight and into tomorrow, but looks to be heating up for the weekend. Looking forward to it!

Later.

*NOTE: I am aware that multi-surfacial isn’t a word. Yet.
