Audio: J.D. Wilkes & The Dirt Daubers

J.D. Wilkes & The Dirt Daubers (formerly The Dirt Daubers) are quickly becoming the number band on the imaginary soundtrack in my head during dirt road rides. At one time it was the sounds of Hank III that country-fried my brain and filled it with images of the critters, farms, landscapes and undercover back road meth labs of rural Michigan, but Hank is on the back burner now, replaced by J.D. and his Daubers.

I have long had a corner of my music loving heart that is drawn to bands and singers like Sun Record era Elvis, Jonny Cash, Hank Sr., The Reverend Horton Heat, Hank III , The Dirt Daubers and J.D.’s original, more psychobilly band– Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers. While I can’t listen to this sort of music all the time, due to the fact that it makes me think I am going down the path of the briefly, almost popular, swing revival of the 1990’s (i.e. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, etc.), it is good and the closest I come to digging country music. I find that while the Daubers play up the vintage country, rockabilly style a bit, they could just as easily pull off the sound without it. I know that sounds a bit goofy to say, but I think many of you will know what I mean.

Here is the video for Wild Moon off their recent release of the same name available on Plowboy Records, iTunes and Spotify.

How can you listen to The Dirt Daubers and not think about rolling down a dirt and gravel farm road on your bike? Of course it also makes me thinking of drinking bad beer, milking cows and making it with the farmer’s daughter… sometimes all at once.
