I woke up early Wednesday morning to some showers moving through the area. I also woke up to find out that our irrigation system was running, and I felt like a real piece of shit for wasting water as it rained. Then I remember that there is a long list of reasons I’m a piece of shit, so I shrugged my shoulders and poured a cup of coffee.
Soon after that cup of coffee, I was on my way to hike in the wet woods (the best!) with the blissful indie sounds of Daydream Intonation by Kinski in my earholes as I drove along.
I was happily the only car in the lot, and was soon in the woods with the scent of freshly applied OFF! bug spray trailing behind.
As soon as I was on real trails, my body was telling me that it wanted to go home for breakfast and more sleep. I failed to listen.
It was nice to be in the wet woods among the ever-growing flowers and trees, and I found that I couldn’t resist a few more apple blossom shots and one of a wild geranium growing near the river.
Along the way, I also saw a few deer, including the one you see in the opening photo hiding in the woods as I lumbered by.
I experimented with some new variations to my standard loops, and it was nice to add some variety to my near-daily routine of hiking in the woods. Of course, it also threw my mind off a bit when I would look at my watch at certain landmarks, expecting to see one number and getting another. I adapted.
At around mile 5, as I made my way through a section of trail filled with vernal pools and swamp, I spied my first frog of the year; NOW, it’s spring!
Seeing that Green Frog perched on its log made me feel good, and put a spring (no pun intended) in my step to finish up and get home for breakfast.
I ended the lumber with 6.08 miles on the day and 19.08 miles on the week thus far. Not bad numbers for an old fat man stumbling around the woods with a camera, sweating all over himself like a freak.
Later.
