Fake Math & Being Alive

Like the millions of leaves that now litter the trails, the past week or so has been a blur of daily hikes, crappy photos, and getting the last bits of pre-winter outdoor duties finished up around the Cul-De-Sac-Shack; I’ve also been missing B-Man, and checking my aggression while being visually assaulted by hundreds of garish roadside political signs from mid-Michigan’s best of the worst, Trumpers, bigots, racists, science haters, election deniers, and religious nut jobs (they go together gut cramps and rancid Wal-Mart peanut butter).

I managed to get in my 25 miles last week, but only by .04 miles! Of course, I did take a day off to let my hulking bodice recover a bit, but I’d like to leave no doubt this week, up my daily miles a bit, hopefully not injure myself, and crush my goal. Or squeak by; either way.

Current mileage since my 2022 Not Dead Yet Comeback Special started on September 19th now sits at 180 miles of hiking. For what it’s worth, my slack ass only covered 235 miles in the 8 MONTHS leading up to the launch of the Comeback Special. That’s an increase of like 87.9%! Actually, I have no idea, I made that up, but Wifey and her brain say that I have done 43% of my total annual mileage thus far in just the past 2 months, which is both pathetic and awesome and the same time1. Hooray for dragging myself out of The Bed of Torment!

OK, time to dump out, take what I hope is the final six bags of leaves to the recycling center, and then get some miles in before seeing what else I can accomplish or think about maybe accomplishing.

Later.

SOILED SOUNDS TRACK OF THE POST:

Today’s track is What a Time to Be Alive from Superchunk’s 2018 record of the same name. It’s another track from another one of those albums that I really gravitated to during the doom-scrolling Trump and COVID years and I will always look back at fondly. (The album, not the Fuckface and COVID years)

Superchunk is one of the greatest indie bands of all time, as well as one of the tightest live acts you’ll ever see. On top of that, Mac and Laura are the faces behind the legendary indie record label, Merge.

I could literally post tracks from every one of Superchunk’s albums, especially the album Indoor Living and the song Martinis on The Roofwhich I remember listening to extensively during many a road trip out west in the early 2000s.

Go forth, listen to Superchunk, and see them live. Also, follow Jon and Mac on Instagram.

  1. These numbers have not been independently fact-checked by anyone, but I trust Wifey WAY more than me.
