The Cold Warm Up

As I took off down the main path towards the trails on Wednesday, it was apparent that I was duped by the warm 80˚ days and cold 45˚ nights and found myself a tad underdressed for the occasion (“Me without clothes? Well, a nation turns its back and gags”). So, I shook off the morning chill, put a spring in my step, and hoped to warm up soon by getting into lumbering mode as quickly as possible.

And just like that, two miles later, I was warming up (more due to the appearance of the sun rather than my speed) and feeling as good a any old ass, overweight slacker can feel while stumbling through the woods with a camera and a dream. OK, there are no dreams, that ship sailed; it just sounded better than saying “a camera and a large intestine filled with regret.”

I wasn’t seeing much to photograph, but I did manage a shot of deer hiding from me in the brush near the Covered Bridge Trail.

There is a noticeable lack of birds around right now, and other than the occasional squawk of a bluejay or “chicka-dee-dee-dee” of a black-caped chickadee, I haven’t seen much. Which sucks, ’cause after the deer, the birds are always a good bet for some crap wildlife images.

Despite the lack of quality images, it was a good hike and I finished with 6.36 miles in my feetz and 18.70 miles of lumbering on the week so far.

Later.

THE SOILED SOUNDS TRACK OF THE POST

The Music Gods know that I love a crooner; Morrissey, Nick Cave, Chris Bailey from Do Nothing, Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys, Glenn Danzig, Elvis, the list of crooning baritones goes on and on.

So, I was pretty intrigued when the mix I made the other day ended, and they made with the suggested tracks, and a song called Hail Damage by the Australian band Flight to Dubai came on. (Of course, they’re Australian; roughly half the bands in my rotation these days are from down under).

I couldn’t comprehend what I was listening to; I thought maybe there was a Glenn Danzig project I had never heard of. But oh no, they’re their own thing. And Cheez-It H. Rice in a D-cup, did I go down a rabbit hole of their recordings! Over the top crooning, along with some ass shakin’ garage punk, was just what I needed to hear and sing at ungodly volumes in the car.

Just like it took me a second to get used to hearing the vocals of (Glenn) Danzig and the Misfits, it took me a few listens for my brain to fully embrace the sounds that Plane To Dubai are making. But when I did, yikes!

The song I kept coming back to over and over and over again is called Failure from their 2020 EP titled Strife.

In the past 24 hours, I’ve listened to Failure roughly 150 times. And you know what, I’m going to listen to it again, right now. I love a good accidental music find.
