The Percentages

In my last post, I said that I felt like I was operating at about 85% physically. Well, I’m happy to say that when I woke up on Wednesday, I was pretty sure I was operating at 91%.

Where and how did I come up with a 6% improvement over roughly 24 hours? Hell, I don’t know; I made that percentage shit up. All I know is that I felt way better than yesterday, and these days, I’ll take whatever I can get. NOT 100%; that’d be daft. I can’t imagine my fat, old, people-hating, depressive ass ever feeling 100%. Or if I ever was.

Ahem, moving on…

With that 6% improvement coursing through my veins like flu-less smack, I enjoyed a large cup of coffee, laughed at Wifey screwing up some protein pancakes she was making for herself, and then strapped on my hiking gear and headed out for another lumber.

I was happy with the slight improvement overnight; I mean, it’s only been three weeks to the day since I first got sick. Again, not great but I was happy enough, and I was looking forward to getting some miles in my feetz and skulking around the woods with my camera in search of some critters.

This is usually where I say something about uncooperative critters and not seeing anything. Well, today, I saw and heard a SHIT ton of critters, but sadly, most often, I was too far away or too slow to react to them—poop.

Amongst today’s critter sightings:

• A beaver swimming in the water near the parking lot. Must have been heading home after working the night shift. I see it at the same time many mornings. Coincidentally, earlier in the morning, I had mentioned it to Wifey as she burnt her pancakes, and I mansplained to her the differences between how a beaver swims and how a muskrat swims.

• Geese swimming and honking in the river and flying overhead.

• A Hooded Merganser Duck. “Ol’ Slabhead!”

• A few Mallard Ducks

• Bluejays, cardinals, robins.

• Numerous squirrels.

• The ass ends of some deer running through the woods.

• A great blue heron taking off from a riverside log.

• The calls and head-banging pecking sounds of Pileated and Red Bellied Woodpeckers.

• The “chicka-dee-dee-dee” calls of black-capped chickadees.

• I saw no humans, which is always a bonus.

That’s a lot of critter action. It also sucks because out of all those critters, I didn’t get one shot that I was REALLY happy with at the time. However, I did save and edit a few pics for the sake of unneeded, unwanted, uncared-about, piss-poor visual documentation of the lumber.

Oh well, at least I was outside, got 5.50 miles in, and sit at 16.53 miles lumbered on the week thus far. And as far as the photos, some days are just like that. Like any fat man, I’ll bounce back. And, to be honest, I actually grew to like some of the ones I edited. I just wish I had been closer, and the light would have been better. But then again, isn’t that the lament of any crap wildlife photographer?

Looking forward to more miles and more chances to fill a memory card. And who knows, I might even wake up on Thursday feeling 95% myself.

Later.
