Lumbers and Frozen Balls

The easiest thing you can do to secure coveted slack status in the world of “doing stuff” outdoors is to not go outdoors. And I nailed that shit this weekend!

Last week, I got 20 miles in my feetz and met my Winter Contingency Act goal in 4 days, leaving three days for indoor fitness activities on the treadmill or trainer doing high-intensity work. That seemed like a good plan to me. Until it didn’t.

It started off great on Friday with a 14.90-mile MyWhoosh ride on the trainer. It felt great to be on the bike and not slipping on snow and ice, and I promised myself that this would be my plan for the next two days.

Saturday, I woke up early, tended to Lola, and then started watching football and goofing off. The next thing I knew, it was late afternoon, and I was still doing the same thing. Oh well, I’ll ride the trainer tomorrow.

Tomorrow came, and it was a near repeat of Saturday, but this time, Spurs were on, and they actually held on to a lead and won. How could I be expected to concentrate on something as stupid as fake bike riding after watching my team play like shit but still win 2-0 with only 2 shots on goal. And one goal was a Brentford own goal put off some dude’s back via a corner from Sonny. Ugly, but a win is a win.

In other words, I did nothing to get my heart rate up this weekend and should be properly shamed. Of course, since I carry around more than 1000% of the adult recommended daily allowance of shame, that means fuck all to me. Nice try, though.

Things got back to normal enough on Monday morning with a 5.36-mile lumber in the woods. The conditions were pretty shit, with last week’s snow half melted, an inch of new snow on top, and warm temps and a “wintry mix” this morning to make things extra soft and slippy. I’d give my left nut for some sun, warm temps, and dry trails.

I started out the lumber with micro-spikes on but had to stop and remove them after a quarter of a mile due to the wet snow balling up. Then, a mile later, I had to stop and undo the under-shoe straps to my gaiters for the same reason. Walking in the mushy snow is hard enough without frozen balls stuck to the bottoms of my shoes.

I didn’t see much catching my eye to photograph, but I did see members of the small family of deer that live near the Covered Bridge trail and a Downy woodpecker out doing woodpecker-type shit.

Despite the shit conditions, it was nice to get back outside. The long-range weather forecast looks to be the same for the next two weeks (mostly/partly cloudy, temps in the mid-20s to 30s), so I guess I better get used to it. Or actually, commit to the indoor workouts I say I’m going to do.

Later.
