Forest Fuzz & Deer

After last Friday’s lumber, I was at 26.21 miles on the week and could have easily completed my third 30-mile week in a row. I did not.

26+ miles of lumbering, nursing a slight calf issue, Cul-De-Sac-Shack duties, and the emotions of sending B off for six weeks in London really took it out of me, and I thought it best to take a mental and physical break for the weekend. Despite a few moments of boredom when the footy ran out, this proved to be the correct decision.

With my calf feeling better and my mind content with the fact that B is doing great in England and loving it, I was back in the fuzz-covered woods and on the trails at 6:35 AM on Monday so as to beat any potential unwanted encounters with Memorial Day revelers (you know how they can be).

It was a beautiful morning, and the crisp 40˚ temps put a spring in my steps, if for no other reason than to warm up!

I saw a few critters, missed a few shots, got a few shots, and sort of got the shit scared out of me when I was on Covered Bridge Trail, and a deer took off out of the brush and into the swampy, reed-filled, wetland area to my right. It took me a second, but I finally found the culprit.

As you can see, that was not my only deer encounter of the morning, and one would startle me again a couple miles later when I came around a corner and came face to snout with one on the trail.

Other than the deer, I didn’t get many shots. I try to shy away from photos of robins due to their prevalence, but when I saw the one shown here had a big ol’ tangle of worms in its mouth, I couldn’t resist.

I got a quick 5.28-mile loop in and was home by 8:30 AM and ready to get fired up for the Memorial Day holiday. Which, for me, is just like any other Monday.

Later.
