The week thus far has been productive in the lumbering and photo departments.
While the mornings are still pretty chilly, spring is definitely in the air, and the forest is slowly becoming alive with activity and burgeoning nature nubbins that will soon turn the trees green.
There has also been an uptick in critter activity, especially the birds. I had possibly gone my entire life without seeing an Osprey, and now I’ve seen and photographed one multiple times, including the photo above from Tuesday morning. I should have used a slightly higher shutter speed to avoid the blur in the one wing, but I was NOT expecting to see the Osprey when I did.
On Tuesday’s 5.12-mile lumber, I also saw a bald eagle flying high overhead and managed a shot from some distance away. It’s not great, but some days, a snapshot for my memory is good enough.

I’ve been trying to get to the trails as early as possible to avoid any critter-spooking dog walkers and people in general on the main trails, so on Wednesday morning, I was on the trails at 7:05 AM, possibly my earliest start to a lumber ever.
Just before the one-mile point, I saw a broad wing hawk fly through the dark woods and land on a nearby tree limb. I took a series of photos and was unsure if I’d be able to salvage any, given the sun was just rising, and the morning darkness and tree limbs were pushing the z50’s autofocus and my subpar abilities to their limits.
I finished Wednesday’s hike with a little over 5 miles and some images I dug, so I can’t complain too much. Right now, I’m at 15.33 miles on the week and 88.45 miles on the month. I’m hoping to bang out the remaining 11.55 miles over the next two days and complete my first 100-mile month since November!
In news not about me and better for it, tonight Wifey and I get to drive down to East Lansing to attend the world premiere of Me.exe, the shortfilm that B and his group have been working on for months. There’s going to be red carpet and everything!
Here’s the e-mail families and friends received from the professor
Thank you for registering to attend the world premiere of “Me.exe” tomorrow (Wednesday, 4/23) at 8:30 PM in Studio C, the production team is really excited to host you.
This short film was produced as a part of a new two-semester course offered through the Digital Storytelling major under the School of Journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences.
This student produced thriller is a collaboration across majors and colleges, mentored by faculty and alumni.
Our exceptional student producers will highlight their work, the process, and experiences. We would encourage the audience to interact and share their thoughts and questions after the playback.
Filmed with the industry standard RED cameras and other high-end gear, this is the latest in our portfolio of high-resolution films with 5.1 surround mix. Recent productions have won the Michigan student Emmys and top awards at the Broadcast Educators Association festival, the preeminent international media competition for student and faculty creative endeavors.
We’re both super excited to view the film for the first time, see B, and have a chance to meet his new gal-pal. This is also helping us take our minds off the last few months of misery and the knowledge that our boy is graduating college next freaking week and then heading to London in couple weeks for one final class!!
Later.
