Using Gifts

On Wednesday, I took myself and my newfound, much-cherished improved mindset out for a walk with my camera. I took the Nikon Z50 with an old DX zoom lens mounted with the FTZ adapter. I also took an old 105mm f/2.8 Lester A. Dine macro lens; that way, if things looked stale, I could kill some time with some manual focus handheld macro shots.

The macro lens is vintage glass given to me a few years ago by a man named Jim; he was the grandfather of one of my son’s former soccer teammates. Jim would always see me shooting at the matches, and one day he called me over and said that he was going to bring me something the next time he saw me.

Fast forward a week or two later, and Jim brings me a camera bag filled with old Nikon lenses from the 70s and 80s, along with an old Nikon film camera and other goodies. He wanted no money for it; he just wanted it to go to someone who would appreciate it and use it.

Sadly, Jim was battling cancer at the time and passed away about a year later. I’m glad that I can keep using that gear he so generously gifted to me and keep his memory going. I’ll always appreciate his kind gesture.

The hike did not really go as planned due to the recent days of freeze, thaw, freeze. The trails were packed ice topped with cold water, and the landscape was nothing but dull grays and browns. So, I gingerly walked about a mile, took a few shitty shots, took a few equally as shitty macro shots, and then headed to Meijer for some groceries, beer, and a pair of traction cleats to mount up on the hikers for future days like this.

Not exactly a workout, but I suppose it was a “creative workout.”
