As I sit typing this dross on Sunday, I am trying to put out of my mind that earlier this week, I hammered out 3 lumbers in 3 days and got 18.5 miles in on dry trails before we got hit with a Thursday morning storm that brought 4 to 5 inches of heavy wet snow; the sort that breaks snow shovels.
Later in the day, the temps warmed a bit, so we were probably left with about 3 inches on the ground by Friday morning. With that, I put hikers on my feetz and headed to Deerfield to check out the trails.
The snow wasn’t exactly deep enough for snowshoes, and Goretex hikers and trekking poles were good enough. I only lumbered 3.75 miles, but it was enough to put me at 22.50 miles on the week and exceed the 20-mile minimum under the Winter Contingency Act.
I had hoped that the temps would stay moderate and the few inches we had would soon be gone, but, alas, it was not to be and the temps quickly dropped into the teens, and the winds started blowing right off the breasts of the witch. Now everything is frozen and icy.
With my lumbering goal met under the WCA guidelines and Wifey gone for the weekend, I opted to throw two fingers up to the world, buy some too much beer, and hibernate alone with the dogs all weekend, watching the football and listening to music at high volumes (The new release from IDLES is out!).
I’ll be back out Monday AM as usual, but it remains to be seen whether I will be on the trails with traction spikes or Gravel Tramping®.
Later.
