A Week Without Routine

As weeks go, this has been an OK one, but anyone who knows me knows that I have a love of routine, and earlier in the week I THOUGHT I was on track. However, this week has had lots of breakups to my sacred daily routine.

In additional to all the normal crap a week throws one’s way, there’s been a dumpster to fill with old stuff, Lola had surgery on her paw, I had an early morning appointment with Dr. Bob, and today I had a mid-morning appointment to have an ultrasound done to pinpoint the location of some small non-visible lipomas on my rib cage that Dr. Bob is going to cut out.

On top of that, Wifey headed back to Pittsburgh this morning to go to some musical with her dad and family this weekend. I’m not 100% what the show is, but I think it’s an off-Broadway production based on the Gay Steel Mill scene from The Simpsons. Pittsburgh, am I right? A shirtless dude wears Daisy Dukes to a Steelers game, and he gets his ass beat. Put the same dude dancing in a steel mill, and the yinzers are swooning.

And worst of all (seriously?), football is on another International Break. Which is OK, but to me, International Break football is about as exciting as watching Japanese porn; you know the kind where they pixelate out the naughty bits, which kinda makes you feel like more of an oddball freak than if they hadn’t. Like someone into having sex with raw meat, or cake sitting (I urge you not to Google cake sitting, trust me).

Despite all those interruptions to my routine and my normal duties, I only missed a lumber on Tuesday.

And today, so as to make it back for my lab work, I was in the cold, 34˚ woods at 6:45 to stomp out a shortened 5.35-mile loop, with nearly half of it done in complete darkness with my headlamp leading the way. I also remembered to dress warmer, so as not to freeze my tuchus.

While the dark mornings are shit for picture-taking, there is something to be said for having over 5 miles in my feetz before 8:20 AM. Sorry, I’m grasping at straws to feel good about myself.

The only real photo I got was the pic of the geese. I was nearly done with the lumber, and the sun was just coming up over the trees, and so bright through the mist that I could barely see what I was photographing!

I also missed a shot of what I THINK was an eagle (or osprey). I was about 150 yards away, on the other side of the river, in the dark woods, wearing nearly all black, and the freaking thing STILL heard/saw me unclip my camera from my pack and took off. Winged jagoff!

My routine should be back to semi-normal the rest of the week, but sadly, I don’t think I’ll hit my 30-mile goal without enduring weekend leaf-peepers enjoying the beauty of dying leaves or post-pumpkin-patch hikers all hopped up on cider, donuts, and phones jammed with crap photos of their snotty kids who, despite mom and dad’s best efforts, found their way out of the corn maze. There’s always next year!

Later.

THE SOILED SOUNDS TRACK OF THE POST

Today’s track features more punk crooning out of Australia—this time from Nancy and The Jam Fancys.

Mirror My Melody was the first song I heard from these guys. I’ve since found some more I dig, but you never forget the first one.
