I’ve never been to prison. Well, at least not yet, but I have been to the U.S. Post Office in the middle of a global pandemic. And I have to think that they are one and the same. The following is the account of my surreal trip into pandemic-era postal bureaucracy on Monday morning.

I’m in an apologetic mood. Don’t get too used to it, it won’t last long. But I feel as if I owe those who may have found this shit show of a blog via an actual cycling blog, or other outdoor-related forum, an apology, or at very least an explanation about myself.

Happy Earth Day!!!!
I never thought much of Earth Day, it was just sort of there. All I knew is that it was one of those days that right-wing republican types thought was a communist plot to bring down capitalism (I wish it was), and religious nut jobs thought was a day of celebrating witchcraft and worshiping pagan gods while smoking weed (Again, I wish it was). And since I spend my life trying to forget that I’m actually related to people who think that way, I just filed it away under things I support but wasn’t permitted to talk about at the family dinner table. Because that is where I would hear such ridiculous claims as “There is no global warming, or “climate change” as they call it now. The earth wobbles and tilts.” Umm… OK… What does that even mean, and what’s your point? It wobbles, tilts, AND the icecaps are melting, the sea is rising, animals are dying, the earth is burning, and man is killing it in the name of the almighty dollar. Sigh.

Monday was yet another windy day in mid-Michigan, and other than some brief time reintroducing myself to the dread-mill, lifting heavy things for no reason, and my thrice-weekly trip to the grocery store, I did nothing.
I did manage to work on losing what’s left of my mind by going through and processing some photos I took late last July during a brief visit home to Pennsylvania.

In my entire life, outside of the ages of 12 to 21, when I would have rather been dead for a variety of reasons (sadly not hyperbole, I was not in a good place), I can’t recall a time in my life that I have struggled with motivation as much as I am right now.

I was motivated, well, at least as motivated as I can get during Pandemic-A-Go-Go 2020, to get myself over to Meridian Park on Thursday to continue my stalking of one of the resident bald eagles. I know where it hangs, and I was ready with my big ass 600mm lens.

Wednesday brought the subtlest of changes to my routine of not having a routine, but they were enough to give my brain the “rub and a tug” it needed.

After getting up at my regular Pandemic-A-Go-Go 2020 time of ten to a quarter after 10 o’thirty on Monday, I wrote something about Sunday’s hike, said I was going to do something out in the gusting winds; then didn’t. Then I went for groceries later that afternoon.
While paying up, there was a man (6 feet) behind me in the checkout line fully ensconced in various shades of camo, sporting an American flag germ mask, and a hat supporting an orange, unhinged deranged totalitarian for President in 2020. Then I became a bit unhinged myself, came home, poured a drink, edited my earlier post a bit out of boredom, and then added a rant1 about said, man. Exciting stuff in the land of (un) soiled COVID-era chamois these days.

Another weekend of Pandemic-A-Go-Go-ing is in the books. That Go-Go-ing offered little of anything other than a short ride on Saturday, a brief escape to the woods with my camera on Sunday, and more attempts to forget what modern life has become via spirits made in Cameron Bridge.
